But the same criticisms can be said for most religions — indeed, most cultures (religious or not). I think there is room to intelligently criticize Mormonism in these areas, but too many attacks on them stem from the position “They’re WEIRD and SPOOKY and DIFFERENT and NOT LIKE US!” — a position that no group should unselfconsciously be working from.

Of course, I strongly suspect that Fischer would blow a gasket over people rejecting conservative Christians based on their faith, even thought that’s certainly included in what he’s arguing for.
7. Just in case y’all were wondering how we got to where we are…. – Nice graphic. Except it isn’t about capitalism — in a capitalistic setting, the 1% and the 9% would be reinvesting much (not all, but much) of their wealth as capital to build new stuff, make new jobs, etc. — the fantasy of all the GOP propaganda. The reason they’ve accumulated so much of the wealth is that they are NOT capitalists, but plutocrats.

Hey, a bit of good news – The stated concern is that if the courts rule against the cops, it will cause them to second-guess what level of force the courts will then deem appropriate and so endanger both the cops and the public in a hypothetical where force is necessary but not used out of fear. Fair enough. But, sooner or later, someone has to put some limits on taser-happy cops. The benefit of the doubt can only be stretched so far — as can the idea that cops are all responsible and professional and never do stupid or abusive things.

Fischer: The Tea Party Ended Slavery In America – Fischer is correct when he says that “evangelical Christians” were leaders in the pre-Civil War abolitionist movement, the results of the Great Awakening earlier in the century — though there were many other prominent figures then and in the preceding decades and century who were not evangelical Christians who also played a major role. And there were, of course, many Christian leaders, the same sorts of Baptists and Methodists whose actions are lauded by Fischer, who were in the South and who claimed their Christian beliefs and a reading of the Bible supported slavery. And, of course, “evangelical Christian” in the mid-19th Century has very little to do with “Tea Party” of the early 21s Century. And, of course, in none of these debates was it ever framed as supporting or opposing “Sharia Law” or Islam. And, of course, Bryan Fischer is a dolt.
