Flautiness

At the "Family" Marching Band rehearsal last night, family remembers were invited down to the field to first listen to the band warming up … and then learn to actually play their instruments.

+Kay Hill was a pretty good instructor. I got at least one note, perhaps two, right.

Then we had to do three band movements. And maneuver the instruments. And hit our dots. (Fortunately, we didn't have to play at the same time.)

Good times. And Kay seemed pretty happy with the job I did (aside from chiding about starting off on the left foot).

Band Stadium Practice

So this one's not all that interesting to the genreral public — mainly posted for family and friends who want to see +Kay Hill doing band practice stuff (until my phone ran out of juice).

How Great Thou Art (Threatened to be Fined)

"How Great Thou Art" is a great old classic hymn. But, no, it's not appropriate for a high school football halftime show — especially when your district has already been sued for proselytizing events, been fined, and are under court order (http://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2015/08/21/brandon-high-school-how-great-thou-art/32143307/):

'Defendants are permanently enjoined from including prayer, religious sermons or activities in any school sponsored event including but not limited to assemblies, graduations, award ceremonies, athletic events and any other school event.'

Not to be censored or silenced when the school marching band was "benched" because that was the halftime show they had planned, a spontaneous chorus of the hymn was then sung by at least some of the folks in the stands (per http://www.onenewsnow.com/perspectives/todd-starnes/2015/08/24/halftime-hymn-players-hogtied).

A few thoughts:

1. Hey, look, you aren't being censored or having your religious freedoms oppressed. Nobody was arrested. Nobody was kicked out of the stadium.

2. As a private (well, personal) expression of devotion, this "spontaneous" outburst is completely protected by the First Amendment. But, of course, there is a big difference between Joe Citizen starting a mass hymn singing and the government (the government!), through the school district, or the school, or the school's marching band, leading everyone in prayer.

3. Of course, though legal, it was a poke in the eye for anyone who isn't a Christian. I would suggest that the good attendees of Brandon High School games consider how they might feel if the halftime marching band show featured a Muslim call to prayer or other devotional doing from something other than Christianity. If the answer is, "Well, that wouldn't be natural, because Jesus is the only true Lord and we're all good Christians here," then you've flunked Church and State 101.

The Mattress Gang

+Kay Hill was peeved that I took a picture of her in her "Mattress Sale" outfit. Fortunately for her, the distance was not conducive to a picture from a mobile phone. Still, for posterity …

Sleeping well by doing good

For any of my Denver-area correspondents, +Kay Hill's band is doing a fundraiser by selling mattresses. Which conjures up a truly amusing image of the kids carrying mattresses door to door, but is actually something they do up i the school gym with demo units that you can see, lie on, bounce up and down on (well, probably not), etc., and then buy at a substantial discount from retail and a percentage goes to the marching band.

Sunday, 26 April, 10am – 5pm, at Arapahoe High School.

Brands included (on the poster) include Beautyrest, Therapedic, Simmons, and Restonic.

So, if you're in the area, and if you've been pondering a mattress purchase — check it out!

Surplus Oom-pah

On the economics and over-supply of adult tuba players. Interesting stuff.

That said, there are a number of high school marching bands that +Kay Hill's competes against that have multiple tubas (or, as illustrated below, Sousaphones), and I wish her school had a few more. Maybe some of the surplus tupists would consider going back to school …

Too Many Tubas
The odds are stacked against these noble brass blowers. A dirty little secret of the orchestral world is that there are far too many tubists.

"To a swell concert mistress"

My mom ran across this a few weeks back while cleaning the garage — a box with scrapbooks from her high school and college days.

In the high school category, she found a program from the 1953 All Cal High School Orchestra that gathered in Santa Barbara once a year. In '53, a young Hal Hill, who lived in Bakersfield, was at the event as principal cello and a soloist, while while a young Gloria Vial, who was living in Santa Barbara, was concertmistress on the violin.

After the event, they headed back to their respective homes, with only some well-wishes scribbled on programs to recall the meeting. Certainly they had no idea that they would encounter each other again at Stanford in a couple of years, let alone eventually marry after graduation.

A neat little bit of family history.

And now your flute interlude for the day

+Kay Hill and three other flautists at Arapahoe HS joined in with other small groups for the various bands’ “Chamber Music Showcase.” Here are the results (for just said flutes, not the other groups, though there was some excellent music going on).

(Kay is on the left, cunningly hidden behind her music stand.)

AHS Band at Rest

In addition to parading during the Streets at Southglenn holiday kickoff soiree, the band played carols at a couple of different locations around the mall.

Oddly enough, I caught them doing the same song here as in the video I took of them marching by. They really did play a wide variety of Christmas music.

Here We Band A-Caroling

The Arapahoe High School Warriors Marching Band (featuring +Kay Hill on flute) was part of the big holiday kickoff at the Streets at Southglenn mall. They did a parade thang through the streets in question, then did a couple of stationary carol playing sessions. Lots of fun.

This was the final marching event for the school year, which occasioned some celebration from the seniors in attendance.

Live and In Concert!

Last night was the AHS Winter Band Concert, and +Kay Hill was there performing in both the Symphonic Band (sort of the JV level performers, which is pretty snazzy for a Freshman) and in the Flute Choir.

Had a good time listening to good music, despite some boorish parents in the audience (the types who talked through performances that their kids weren't in, and/or who left after their kids had performed).

Colorado State Finals Marching Band Competition: The Video (2014)

In case you're not yet tired of my nattering on about it, here's a video shot from the stands of the Colorado state finals show by Arapahoe High School last Saturday. A few problems with the sound system, but overall the show went great, and it netted them a season-high score of 80.15 for 5th place, less than a 2/3 of a point below the 4th place band.

+Kay Hill is in there playing the flute, generally audience left, but it's awfully hard to spot her moving around amidst the other blond flute players with their hair up in buns, let alone once they get shakos on their heads.

As a "credits sequence" special bonus (?), you can actually spot me after the show in my yellow boosters shirt and black-and-yellow cap, gathering up cables and wheeling the left-hand speaker away (holding up the front wheels so it didn't dig ruts into the astroturf). Margie's off far right, wrangling one of the microphones.
