Bits and Bobs from 2012-08-06

Olympics

  1. Our unpatriotic Olympians! – Fox Sports commentator critiques US Olympians — especially the gymnasts, especially Gabby — for not wearing the stars and stripes, calling it “soft anti-Americanism.”
  2. Fox Sports, racist? Perish the thought! – Oh, and another Fox Sports commentator sniffs at Serena Williams doing a little dance after her gold medal victory.

Serious stuff

  1. Why, yes, there is an attack on religious freedoms going on here – But it’s not against Christians.
  2. Seeking Sikh – Not a lot of folks know anything about the Sikh religion. It’s a shame that a tragedy like the temple shooting should be the first time people think about it, but better late than never.
  3. Managing managed animal populations – When there are too many animals of a particular breed or breeding line, zookeepers in different countries vary on the best way to control the population.
  4. The Crew of the “Enola Gay” – And their thoughts over the decades about the bombing of Hiroshima.
  5. It’s too darned hot – Heat wave continues in Denver.

Fun stuff

  1. Star Crossed – The connection between Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald.
  2. Advanced planning can help you avoid embarrassing situations – Great idea, faulty execution.
  3. Why do stubbed toes hurt so much? – Because, boy, do they.
  4. Lego “Serenity” is very shiny – Well done!
  5. So make the Bad Horse gleeful, or … – The Evil League of Evil is watching, so beware
  6. I take my paternal model from Calvin’s Dad – But this dad will do in a pinch.
  7. Playing around with Wireless N – My current home networking struggles.
  8. Life insinuates into art – Fun with statuary.
  9. Dumping Daredevil – If Marvel/Disney negotiates to let Fox keep Daredevil (or his film rights) longer, in return for some more Cosmic heroes, that would be a win-win.
  10. Concerted Effort – Kay preparing for a band concert this weekend.

Concerted Effort

Kay has been participating as an intermediate student in the Colorado Honor Band this summer.  They had their final (metro-wide) rehearsal this afternoon before their big concert this weekend.  Kay is center-left, holding her flute in a perfect horizontal position.

Music, hark!

So Kay is continuing on with her flute-playing. One of her friends got this, and she begged for it, and I decided it was a worthwhile investment.

It's a collection of sheet music for flute for the LotR movies, with an eye toward that player as the lead whenever possible (there are also sets for trumpet, saxes, horn, clarinets). The music book also has a CD for each song, both a demo of how it should sound, and an accompaniment for the rest of the music for the piece (all that lovely harmony and counterpoint and so forth from these tunes).

Not only is she really enthusiastically trying this stuff out (it's at a higher level than she is as a player, but she's diving into it with a will), but it's a hugely fun concept. In theory, you could get the other instruments going along with it live, and there's even, for teachers, a piano accompaniment book.

Hearing her play LotR tunes is just a hell of a lot of fun. (Whistling the along to the counterpoint is, too.)

There's a similar Harry Potter compilation that might just be appearing for her birthday, too.

  • Greater love hath no man, than that he goeth to his daughter's 6th grade band concert when his new laptop hath arrived. #sheowesme #
  • At school for Kay's concert. New PC is at home, dutifully downloading City of Heroes. #
  • We got here plenty early this time, to get decent seat. So, of course, they're late in opening up. #
  • Front-row seats at the flute section. Score! #

Floutist, er, Flautist

  • I don't know if it's Freudian or simply sloppy fingers that I keep misspelling "consulting" as "consluting". #
  • Leaving work a bit early because of Kay's Xmas concert. #
  • Apparently there are a very large number of 6th Grade band parents, relatives, all of whom are remarkably punctual at school functions. #

Band Concert

Thar she blows!

Katherine’s first band concert was tonight.  The 6th Grade, then the 7th Grade, bands performed.  As a dad I will simply say that I enjoyed having her up there on stage, attentive and having fun.

  • Also, flutes to buy are GODAWFULLY EXPENSIVE. I mean, what, are they made of platinum? #

Music, Maestro!

Katherine auditioned for, and got, a solo at the 4th Grade concert. She has the opening verse of “Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay” (performed below by Danny and the Juniors):

Woot!

It was one of those “I can’t think of anything I’d leave on the plate, but it sure was a lot to swallow” weekends — Brew at the Zoo, Kitten’s Sleepover, and the Nylons Concert.  There were bits and pieces of free time in there, but not a whole heck of a lot.

It was a long weekend for Kitten, too — to hear her tell it.  The sleepover, of course.  But the being sat by Jackie at the house on Friday and at her place on Sunday also took it’s apparent toll — she was cranky and not-wanting-to-go-to-school and not-wanting-to-dress-up-for-school-pictures this morning, according to Margie.

(Though, as I noted, I didn’t particularly feel like coming to work, or getting dressed up for same.)

Let’s see if we can have a relatively more calm week.  If nothing else, Margie and I have a ton of backlog TV to watch on the DVR, not to mention getting cracking with those Heroes season 1 DVDs.

Waiting for the concert …
