The retreat went remarkably well, for all the en route troubles. We met down at the church at 8:30a, and basically spent all day there (with a couple of joint meal breaks down to Country Buffet) until around 9p. While the retreat missed some of the social aspects of staying over at Bear Trap a couple of nights, plus the beauty of the mountain settings, it was still memorable and meaningful. Kudos to the folks who managed to reorganize the thing on a dime.

Four more Alpha dinners, and life can return to something resembling normalcy.

“I not me feel good, Daddy. I not feeling well.” It would be very cute, if it weren’t sad.

Well, it’s cute, regardless.

Well …

… it was snowing down in Colorado Springs as we headed up through town toward the road to Bear Trap Ranch. Indeed, the street leading to the Broadmoor was pretty darned snowy, and the street going around the Broadmoor was even snowier, and on the steep residential street we had to go up it was snowy and slippery and I was feeling kind of glad that I wasn’t trying to drive it myself (especially in the Saturn) …

… and when we got to where the pavement ends, and the dirt/gravel road begins, there was someone from Bear Trap there, turning everyone back, because it had been snowing all afternoon higher up, and big 4WD vehicles with chains had been having serious problems on the road.

So, we turned around and slowly crept down the hill, and slowly drove back up to the metro area — with road conditions pretty darned awful all the way up to just below Castle Rock (to the point where I was seriously wondering if we’d have to find a motel somewhere), and with the driver of the car insisting on changing lanes whenever someone in front was going too slow, but not changing back when traffic backed up behind us.

My dislike of being driven by others was not eased by the experience. On the other hand, if it had been me driving, I’d still be on the road.

Rrg.

But we made it, and we had a Disney CD to sing along to, and all turned out well.

The retreat is going to be done as an all-day (and into the evening) event down at the church instead, tomorrow. Which is a shame, because part of the retreat weekend is the “retreat” part of it, being away from family and home and spending time and meals together and all.

On the other hand, it means I can sleep in my own bed, shower in my own shower, and kiss my wife, frequently. So it’s all good.

Whew.

“Fiddler on the Roof!”

Oh, well. At least it wasn’t Happy Days.

But it should probably make you think twice about it.

snow.jpgA lesson we too often forget.

A lesson we should try to remember.

I’m not saying that the differences we have are not real, that they should be ignored, that they don’t matter.

But too often we look at just the differences, and we ignore the similarities.

Sometimes we think that the differences are all that matter.

Sometimes we think that the differences are all that is real.

Sometimes that’s the most comfortable thing to do. Sometimes that makes things easier, simpler, at least in the short term.

But in the long term, it’s denying reality. And reality can bite you if you ignore it.

If we’re going to survive, we’ll have to remember the similarities, too.

Nothing profound here, just an update on How Things are Going.

It’s been snowing on and off here in Denver for most of the week. The streets clear out to dryness just in time to get dusted again. That’s all to the good — we so badly need the moisture, but we don’t need it all in one day.

It makes driving in more interesting, of course. I’ve gotten so gun-shy at the Saturn on snow that even a light coat of muddy slush is enough to get me white-knuckling my way to work. I take the I-25/I-70 route, not because it’s faster, or because I enjoy maneuvering through T-Rex, but because it’s highly traveled, and thus snow will be more likely to be melted away or plowed or sprayed or pushed aside.

I’m not driving myself to Bear Trap Ranch this afternoon for the retreat, thank heavens. Margie needs to have the van here for Kitten Transport, and the road is not the best for the Saturn under summer circumstances; if it’s wintry, I’d as soon not. So I’ll be riding down with someone else, who has a Jeep with 4WD. I dislike riding with strangers (being my father’s son and all), but it’ll be worth it.

Things have been busy. I think we’ve kind of gotten back up onto the wavefront after our time away, balancing and maneuvernig frantically down the pipeline of commitments. The big focus of our weeks is the Monday night Alpha — Margie’s especially, doing the cooking for 100, but I’ve got my own time sunk into it, as well as the peripheral Margie support — going to the store, helping watch after Kitten, etc.

Gaming has only started getting moving again — the advantage of dragging your GM off on vacation with you. D&D at the house tonight, since Margie will be single-parenting with Katherine while I’m away. Keep her in your thoughts …

We’re still not caught up with everything, though. There’s still a Christmas tree in the living room (artificial, of course, and de-decorated), and stacks of mail that need sifting (though I made sure the water bill was paid before I left), and other such overhead tasks.

And, of course, my Muse has been prodding me about getting Catspaw finished. And, in fact, she gave me an idea for advancing the plot that I need to follow up on …

… as soon as I get make some time …

The new WTC?Okay, I thought it had already been settled, but clearly not. The “official” new plan for the World Trade Center replacement was announced yesterday — focusing on a 1,776 foot (get it?) main spire, and various “jagged” office buildings around it. The main tower would be the tallest in the world. A slide show of the design can be found here.

Click for larger imageI still like the Think design, personally. The spire of the the Libeskind design is too skinny on the skyline for my taste (click on the thumbnail to the left for a larger image). And I’m not so much into the jaggy buildings.

And now, of course, comes the real test — digging up the money to do this, with whatever design strings may be attached to same, and figuring out who’s actually in charge of the whole effort — city, state, Port Authority, etc.

It should be an interesting challenge. And I’m glad they’re doing something bold, even if I don’t particularly care for it all that much.

Oh, the smell of it!

GOODNEWS1 = Our ALPHA class retreat is coming up. This is always a lot of fun (not to mention, dare I say it, kinda spiritual), up at Bear Trap Ranch in the beeyooteeful mountains above Colorado Springs. I always look forward to it, even though this year I’m going to be Margie-less.

GOODNEWS2 = We’ve been getting lots of snow this week, every day in fact, with the mountains getting even more. This is great, because heaven knows we need the moisture, with a couple years of drought behind us. As of the other day, we were at 89% normal in the mountain snowpack, and it’s been snowing well up there every day and night since.

BADNEWS = SUM(GOODNEWS1, GOODNEWS2)

Should be an interesting weekend.

Here’s an interesting idea — UN Secretary-General Bill Clinton?

It would certainly put the nail in the coffin of faith in the UN by many on the right in the US, given the rabid, venomous hatred that constituency has of Clinton. Of course, many of those folks have little faith in the UN already.

Clinton would certainly, as an consummate schmoozer, be a good choice as someone who might actually get the UN to do something other than bicker and make anti-US speeches. He brings a perspective on the Middle East that could be helpful, and he has connections in the US that might be handy, as well.

On the other hand, could Bush and Clinton actually function as peers on the world stage? Either of them? Would the political animus from the GOP make the UN’s job even harder? Would Clinton’s desire to show up Dubya increase tensions?

It’s almost like being able to visualize a train wreck — there’s something fascinating about the whole prospect even if you think it would be dreadful.

Whew. I think that’s all the Britain pictures added to our PictureTrail site. I got the various print photos cleaned up and uploaded and sorted into the appropriate places.

So, if you want to go back to the picture gallery again, and you want to zero in on just the updated pictures in each of the Britain volumes, look for the pics with the asterisk (*) in front of their thumbnail descriptions.

As the other folks from the trip (ahem) get their pics available, I’ll probably incrementally add applicable ones here, but won’t make any new announcements unless there are a lot of adds.

Well, it’s certainly not a vacation on the Riviera, but things are getting better — particularly in Kabul, despite all the problems.

Many of those perceived troubles are real and worrisome, and nobody would mistake Kabul for a prosperous and peaceful city. Sections are still in ruins, and many of the 600,000 returning refugees who have flooded the city live precariously on the margins. Islamic militants remain determined to destabilize and oust the Karzai government through violence, and periodic attacks continue. There is also concern that the flashier developments could offend conservative Afghan attitudes and create a dangerously wide divide between the relatively rich and the very poor.
But whatever the risks, the Kabul of today is almost unrecognizable as the austere city ruled not long ago by the Taliban — or as the place where warring Islamic militias demolished neighborhood after neighborhood, or where Soviets presided over a rebellious socialist state.

Most notably, Afghanistan’s seeing a lot of business investment from abroad, and entrepreneurs at home. We should definitely be doing all we can to encourage both.

The last signal from the probe to reach the Earth came on 22 January. Further attempts havfe failed.

Pioneer 10 carries a gold plaque engraved with a message of goodwill and a map showing the Earth’s location in the solar system. The spacecraft continues to coast toward the star Aldebaran in the constellation Taurus. It will take 2 million years to reach it.

Why does anyone listen to this man?

It’s also unnecessary to point out to the half a dozen or so sane people who remain that in comparison to the conditions imposed by US tyranny and violence, East Europe under Russian rule was practically a paradise.

Actually, I’m sure Chomsky would get confirmation of his view from those kindly psychologists and judges in the former Soviet bloc who used to send people off to insane asylums for questioning the beneficences and marvels of the People’s State.

Yes, I’ll bet he would.

Amazing.
