Slow going

Got up this a.m. at the usual time, at 5 (urg). Did all my morning ablutions, headed out the door …

… oh. Snow. Another couple of inches. Well, we can certainly use it, right? I mean, that’s a good thing, right?

Not when you drive a car that weighs less than you do.

I managed to get all the way to the Interstate, to find that (a) folks were traveling faster than I felt comfortable doing, except for (b) in the right-hand lane, which is extraordinarily messy because of traffic merging on and off, which (c) I could confirm by the fact that my featherweight car was bouncing all over the place.

Have I mentioned how annoyed I am about the whole not-buying-a-car-this-year thing?

I got off at the next exit, and spent the next fifteen minutes creeping my way back to the house. My arrival there got Margie out of bed, which I regret, but knowing of a couple of similar times (one of the reasons I am such a snow wimp), I don’t blame her for being concerned as to why I had returned.

So, we’ll try that a bit later, when traffic has cleared things up a bit. Maybe.

(I’d usually take the van in these conditions, but Margie’s going into her office, and taking Katherine in, too, to the day care there, so that’s not a real option.)

I fire up the computer, start accessing our company’s Internet mail gateway, all’s going well, fire up my personal e-mail, fire up my blog page …

… not found, not found, DNS error, not found.

Feb 6 2003 – 0802 Eastern – The routing issue is degrading at this time to include all IPs in our available pool. Stand by.
Feb 6 2003 – 0750 Eastern – The NOC has been working on the routing issue since it began. Those with sites out of the 216.118.* range can access site and mail via IP address if attempting to access those functions via name does not result in successful connection. Updates will be posted as available, and a network statement will be available this afternoon to cover the events of the past several days.
Feb 6 2003 – 0700 Eastern – Currently, any site with an IP beginning in 216.118.* is affected. Sites with IPs in other ranges are not affected by the bounceback, but may experience lags or timeouts due to high latency at the router level.
Feb 6 2003 – 0650 Eastern – We are currently seeing a bounceback at the gateway router at the NOC. This is under investigation.

Well, at least that will help me get some work done …

UPDATE: Okay, looking good again. Oh, well.

UPDATE (7:35a): Since we’re looking at ongoing snow during the day, in the inches up in Lakewood and Golden, I think I’ll give the work thing a pass today, and look at going in tomorrow. (I’d really like to get in once more before I head out on vacation. It’s not essential, but it would be helpful.)
