Teaching students their rights can be dangerous to your career

If a survey is asking students to effectively identify themselves by name and if they have engaged in illegal behavior, is it a bad thing if a teacher advises them of their Fifth Amendment right to not self-incriminate? Apparently, given the treatment of said teacher by the school administration.

I understand the (laudable) purpose of the survey, but there are ways this (both the survey and the treatment of the teacher, John Dryden) could have been handled a lot better.
