"Penguins of Madagascar" looks … darned promising

Loved their appearences in the Madagascar movies, but thought the TV series was a little sketchy. This trailer for the upcoming movie, though, looks pretty good.

Also, is there nothing that Benedict Cumberbatch isn't in? Are we sure he didn't have a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy?

The Possibly Truncated Legend of Korra

If this is a sign that Nick is getting ready to pull the plug, I'll be pretty put out.  After a semi-disastrous second season (the first half semi), the third season has been rock solid and enjoyable, despite Nick's lack of publicity leading up to it.

Okay, this is kind of weird — it's CGI of Lego simulating a wave crashing, designed as a test for The LEGO Movie.

http://www.fxguide.com/featured/brick-by-brick-how-animal-logic-crafted-the-lego-movie/

The levels of abstraction here — modeling an actual wave, then rendering it as if it were all being done in Lego — are mildly mind-boggling, but it's a very neat effect.

RIP, Bob Hastings

Bob Hastings was a face that nobody who watched TV in the 60s and 70s could fail to recognize (check out his CV at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0368561/).  But I had no idea that he was the long-time voice of Commissioner Gordon in "Batman: The Animated Series" and subsequent video renditions.  He did a great in the role.  Thank you, sir.

Yeah, radio and music and yadda-yadda … you'll always be the voice of Shaggy and Robin to me, sir. Thank you.

Legend of Korra – Book 3 "Change" trailer!

I had some problems with LoK last season — the first half was full of people acting stoopid, though the second half largely redeemed that.

This, though … this has got me excited.

Honest Trailers – "The Lion King"

I enjoy most of the Honest Trailer efforts, but this one's particularly funny.

Disney gets a bit un-Frozen on intellectual property

Disney has traditionally been the 800-pound mouse when it came to enforcing its IP copyrights, notoriously doing things like sending cease-and-desist notices to a nursery school that had Disney characters painted on a playground-facing wall.

It's acceptance of Frozen fan-generated content, though, indicates that they might be finally seeing how community use can actually build a brand, and sales with it.

I'm sure the lawyers are still watching carefully, and how far this can be pushed remains to be seen (or litigated). But it's a long-term good change for Disney.

It does seem that letting fans express themselves creatively with your IP is a good strategy. The people making those videos are the same people who are buying your product in mass quantities and they only add to the exposure of your IP. Also the good PR from being tolerant of this sort of thing can only help your image in the long run. Disney seems to have figured this out.

How Disney learned to stop worrying and love copyright infringement
For years, Disney was notoriously heavy-handed in defense of its intellectual property. Then along came “Frozen”

Movie Review: "Frozen" (2013)

It's a gorgeous movie that starts out amazingly strong, but is crippled by overly-pop music and a third act that melts away all the interesting complexity that the first two acts delighted in.

A ★★★½ review of Frozen (2013)
Apparently we’re the last people ever on the planet to see “Frozen,” but we finally managed this evening. And the result? Mixed. The production values are gorgeous. Snow and ice have never looked so impressive. The voice artistry is all artistic and competent. The story starts off strong and complex, full of mixed motivations and and complexity of emotions. The traumatized (and oppressed/suppressed daughter, the happy-go-lucky but still oddly wou…

RIP Arthur Rankin, Jr

The "Rankin" in "Rankin-Bass," he produced some truly awesome and iconic things over the years, including the stop-motion Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty The Snowman and Mad Monster Party. Also the animated Hobbit, which I truly love.

Thank you sir. I appreciate it.

Movie Review: "Jack the Giant Slayer" (2013)

It's well-crafted, has a decent story and good actors, but never rises beyond being a charming (if violent) fairy tale and morality play.  I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but not as much as I would have liked.

A ★★★½ review of Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)
This film has flash and spectacle worthy of a Bryan Singer film, but ultimately it’s a fairy tale of characters performing mythic roles that left me entertained but not enraptured. The cast is actually pretty large, and features several characters that drive the action (and, in many cases, survive to the end). The players all do their parts quite well, though there just isn’t much “part” to play — the doting father king, the rebellious princess,…

The girls are back in Townsville.

The Powerpuff Girls Return to Television January 20th
Things have been pretty quiet in Townsville since 2005 when The Powerpuff Girls went off the air, or at least I assume so. After all, Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles would never leave the city in danger. But you might not want to plan a day trip out there on January 20th. My advice? Just sit at home and watch the coverage on TV. Mojo Jojo is up to his old tricks.

Movie Review: "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas" (2003)

I really love this film — just triffic fun. I was saddened to see DVDs of it for sale for $5 at the local Safeway. I'd recommend it to pretty much anybody.

A ★★★★ review of Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003)
This remains a favorite of mine whenever I watch it. The animation is beautiful, the music is great, the story is a neat blend of fairy tale, romance, and adventure … there little here not to love.

Movie Review: "Epic" (2013)

Kay has been jonesing for us to see this movie with her. So we did (that's gotta be worth a couple of B5 episodes, right?).  And, actually, it turned out better than I thought, with most of the frenetic pacing and face-slapping goofiness balanced by some genuine poignancy and some really nice visuals.

A ★★★½ review of Epic (2013)
“Epic” is … not. But it’s not bad, and even if it flits about like a hummingbird on crack, neglecting all the most cursory character development, it also features some gorgeous animation and some decently moving emotional beats. The film suffers from a few plotlines too many — girl trapped in the miniature world, girl’s relationship with dad, girl’s relationship with wastrel, wastrel’s relationship with heroic elder, heroic elder’s relationshi…
