… I succumbed to intense social pressure (coughDoycecough) and tried out for myself that newfangled “City of Heroes” game. I didn’t actually blog about it for a bit because I was sort of, um, keeping it secret from Margie (I knew I could quit any time).
The rest, as they say, is history. And while my own gameplay over the past few months has been near-nothing, Margie continues to solo her way through endless hours of fun with CoX and CO.
And as soon as Kitten goes to bed and they both get off the Wii (where they are playing Scooby-Doo), she and I are going to play some City of Heroes.
And who knows … maybe I’ll actually start playing again. Heck, maybe I’ll start posting to this blog again! Stranger things have happened!
See y’all in Paragon!
IMHO, CoH is the better game by a wide margin. CO was quite a letdown after looking very promising. Biggest pet peeves: despite the higher system requirements, the graphics don’t actually look better than CoH, they just look different. And I find the player models to look very ugly. Oh, and Martial Arts’ animations…wow, those are pretty bad.
Next up: DC Universe Online. Looks like a contender. Anyone’s guess how good it is, but with a free-to-play-with-microtransactions model, and a very strong IP (the strongest in the superhero MMO sector) it’s got the potential to build a very large player base. Time will tell, but the fact they seem to be aiming it at consoles isn’t a good sign (hello CO part 2 lol).
Distant future: Marvel Universe Online. I’m hoping they forget consoles even exist and go hardcore PC MMO with it. Superheroes and deep, traditional MMO game play are not mutually exclusive.
Honestly, I have to disagree with you, D. I find the graphics in CO to be significantly better than those in CoX. And I love the MA animations (much better than the rather blocky MA animations in Cox).
Not that I dislike CoX. CO’s problems are more in (still) game/level balance and that sort of thing. But I think the animations and the comic book style is great.
I haven’t been impressed by what I’ve seen of DCUO. Yeah, they have the IP, but since you’re not actually playing one of the Big Guys, it’s a lot less of a draw than, say, the IP in STO. Bottom line — IP isn’t everything; building an enjoyable game is more important than the setting (IMO).
So Margie and I signed on as Fazenda and Araware (two of the few remaining active Storm Knights). And we ran a mish, then a safeguard mish, and it was good.
But it was mostly good because it was doing it together. 🙂
I was struck (see previous comment) with how relatively primitive the CoX graphics seemed. And the run from one isolated mob to the next game mechanic. But it’s still a fun game.
As an aside — not sure how CoX counts it, or how I came up with that date, but CoX didn’t inform me I’d hit my 5 yr anniversary. I was at 57 months, however, which gives me, woot!, 50% off all tailor transactions. Which is keen, except that, e.g., Fazenda has *28* free tailor tokens. 🙂
Dave and I have decided at agree to disagree about the relative values of CoX and CO graphics. I enjoy the CoX style more than the comic-y CO style. I love the little details like cockroaches in the sewers. When CO add a detail like old bottles in the sewers, half the time they are floating 2 feet off the ground. I like what CO does with some of the mob placement and movement. CoX has been improving on that especially with the zone revamps. I am looking forward to what they both will put out in their 2010 expansions.
