Now Alumnus Wolverine Does What Alumnus Wolverine Does Best: Drink Beer

They had a "Snap Yourself" setup at the Wash during the Alumni Weekend Saturday beer fest, complete with hats and a few props. +Margie Kleerup and I went with this combo.

An unfortunate byline

Given concerns over date rape and the bad decisions people make while drunk — it seems to me this takes the selling point of "this will help you have a good time" maybe a scosh too far.

Government drinking specifications

Of course, given what was going on in the US government in 1974, no wonder booze was a popular topic.

That said, I'd check the recipes carefully before throwing a Government Cocktail Party. A 2:1 gin:vermouth ratio in a martini is almost undrinkable.

Do you like Craft Beers in Boulder? Gettin' caught in the rain?

Oops. Inadvertently posted this Privately in G+ rather than Publicly.

One further observation on the festival: I was probably in the 95th Percentile, age-wise. Gads. Still had a good time.

Do you like Craft Beers in Boulder? Gettin' caught in the rain?

The inaugural Boulder Craft Beer Festival ran into a bit of a downpour problem for about twenty minutes this afternoon. Actually, it worked out pretty well, since it broke the cycle of queue-pour-queue that everyone was in. Plus, everyone had a blast either getting soaked or huddling under one or the pop-ups or patio umbrellas (the good cheer being enhanced by, well, beer).

It was actually a lot of fun as an event (downpour notwithstanding). There were a couple dozen breweries there, almost all good (though almost all pouring at least one IPA, sigh), and while the lines eventually got long, by and large it didn't feel oppressively crowded (helped by a limit on the number of tickets they sold). We went with Mary and Stan and Jackie (designated driver) and Scott, and look forward to going again next year.

The Most Important Line of All

Yeah, you end up in a lot of lines at a beer festival. But one line provides the highest level of anticipating, if not urgency …

The Bowdlerizer of Beer Bottles

Did you know there's one guy in Washington who has to review — then approve or reject — every beer label design in the US? This year, that's been almost 30,000 to date. It's enough to drive one to drink …

No, but seriously, it's got to be a thankless job, given the (presumed) parameters he has to work with as far as having labels not be misleading as to contents, assert medical benefits, promote drug use or drunkenness — all of which seem fairly straightforward parameters in theory but in effect are highly subjective. It seems crazy to have one man doing it — but, heck, it's probably more consistent than having three people doing.

Meet the Beer Bottle Dictator
Widely regarded as an eccentric bureaucrat, Kent ‘Battle’ Martin approves essentially every beer label in the United States, giving him awesome power over a huge industry.

On the Naming of Beers

I'm sure that some true connoisseurs of brewing will point and laugh a my ignorance of beer nomenclature, but it seems like suddenly everyone (or at least all the micro-breweries) is putting out a "Helles" beer, I term I'd not encountered in the past but which, so far as I can tell, is just a light-colored, common lager, but with a lot classier name.

http://beer.wikia.com/wiki/Helles (which basically gives Löwenbräu as common model)

Is this the hot new craze / product category / trend in the beer world?
