Wherein it becomes clear we are not, actually, channeling Bruce Lee

So Katherine and I entered a karate tournament this weekend. It was a cross-school/organization tournament, held in the lovely Niwot High School Gym (about a hour north of us).

The kids competed in the morning. Katherine (entered in the 7-8 y.o. bracket, 1-2 years experience) did a solid performance for her kata. I was actually surprised that she didn’t get a 1st/2nd/3rd place medal in her group, she was that good.

I was in the afternoon. Which turned out to be late afternoon. Which turned out to be “we’re running about an hour late and your group is the highest age bracket, thus some of the last to compete” late afternoon, starting about 4:30p and ending around … 5:30p. They were already stacking up the chairs around us …

Long story short, I thought my kata was pretty solid (I actually have little memory of it, but think I did reasonably well). I knew after the first few guys in my age/experience cohort led off that I probably wasn’t going to get a medal, but I thought I did a decent job.

Annoyingly, I ended up as the 5th (point-wise) in a group of 6. I really don’t understand why, but I’ll be asking at least one of the seniors from my dojo who said she was watching me and that I did good what about what I did was likely to have garnered the low score.

Part of what took so long is that they were doing both kata (the formal movement sequences) and kumite (sparring), and the sparring in each group took for-evah, and each group had to stick around for whole thing, even if we were just doing kata and not kumite (it’s a politeness thing).

Neither Katherine nor I went for sparring this time out. They were doing free-style sparring, even among the kids, which is actually not all that good a thing for the young’uns. And since I’ve never compete in a karate tourney before, I decided to take one in, sparring-wise, before actually leaping into it. (I’ll probably do it next time.)

At any rate, we got out of there very late, too late to make it back to the house, get changed, make a salad, and head off to the church dinner party we were scheduled for. So we called with our regrets, but since we already had a sitter lined up, Katherine hung at home, and Margie and I went out to dinner (to the Old Blinking Light).

Margie deserves special mention today, as she basically sat in the bleachers for, oh, eight-plus hours, much of the time watching after Katherine. Thanks, love!

One of the interesting things about the tournament was that there were other schools of training there, not just Shotukan Karate. As a result, it was like seeing how other “families” interpret the traditional katas differently from how we do. I like our way (which is much more self-defense oriented, not pretty dancing/movement kind of stuff) better, but it was still very interesting to see.

Anyhow, long day, somewhat disappointing, but also a good experience. Glad we went.

Having been out sick the past few days, I’m now running at 150% to catch up with all the doings at work.

(I don’t think I mentioned — most recent re-org sees my Vast Empire slowly expanding once again. One guy who got split into another department with his two directs now works for me again. Another guy who used to work for me was also folded into my domain.)

There’s also a Very Busy Weekend ahead: Saturday we have a karate tourney up in Niwot (!), followed by our church social dinner thang in the evening. Sunday we have all the normal weekend stuff to catch up on (leaves! must! sweep!), plus folks coming to the house for a Post-Election Game Day & Supper (house! must! tidy!).

But Obama won. That makes me happy.

Back when I was first starting karate, I talked about the Dojo Kun, the class precepts we recite at the end of each session.

This is translated (and recited) in our dojo as:

  1. Seek perfection of character.
  2. Be faithful.
  3. Endeavor.
  4. Respect others.
  5. Refrain from violent deeds.

It occurred to me the other night that this was also a fine test for a political candidate. In particular, the candidates for President in tomorrow’s election.

Seek perfection of character: Does your candidate seek to improve himself? To learn more? To become better, morally?  Conversely, is he satisfied with where he is, believing he already knows all the answers?

Be faithful: Is your candidate sincere, out to protect the way of truth? Are they honest? Yeah, there’s politics … but beyond that, are they trying to follow the true way?

Endeavor: Are they always trying, persevering, working hard, putting maximum effort into what they do?

Respect others: Are they polite? Do they act with good manners, etiquette, showing a respectful attitude toward other people, and more than just outwardly, is that an inward value they hold?

Refrain from violent deeds: More than an aversion to physical violence (though that is part of it), this is a call to avoid impetuous courage, uncontrolled behavior, aggression, instead seeking self-control in what you do.

I think Barack Obama, to an admirable degree, displays all those qualities. I’ll let you judge him, and John McCain, yourself. At the very least, it’s something to think about as you cast your vote.

Next up in karate …

All sorts of things going on, though few of them are concluding as yet.

In karate, I’m getting ready for testing for my green belt. That should be a week from Thursday.

On the front yard, we’re awaiting approval from the HOA (no problems expected), and still need to make some design decisions. One problem is that we’re late enough in the season that some of the tree varieties we want are not available in mature models; we may hold off on some of that until the Spring, though I’d hate to wait for all of it. Estimated start time is now some time next week, not necessarily Monday.

Attended a Girl Scouts organizing meeting for Kitten the other evening. They’re short on 3rd graders, so the local unit poobah is going to determine the best course, probably hearing back in a week or two.

I finally have all my visa application info for my India trip, and will be submitting that today. Yeesh, what a pain. That should be back in a couple of weeks, in more than enough time for the trip itself.

There’s some shaking up going on in my department right now — not bad stuff, but more-work stuff. There are also some uncertainties about the overall budget this year; we’ll see how the new CIO does.  I expect more on this in a week or so.

Oh, and there’s an election in a couple of months. Though there’s not much I do there besides vote (and blather on here).

Wish there was some closure to be had around here. 🙂

Green Belt, that is.

Between (a) having been out of pocket (and out of class) for a couple of weeks at the top of the month, and (b) being out of town on business next week, and (c) off on vacation for the following two, the fact that next week is testing week in our karate class means that …

… well, I’m not sure I’m ready, and there’s not an easy way to reschedule.

So I’ll stick with the green belt until testing in September.

As for Katherine, I told her that she didn’t need to skip the test just because I was. I’m not sure she’s ready, either, but I leave that to her and Sensei to make the call.

After my sports injury (I still get a mild kick out of writing those words), I’ve been popping Advil and trying to take it easy on that arm. Though odd movements that twist or extend that elbow still hurt some (often unexpectedly — “Hey, I didn’t realize doing that meant moving my arm like this“), it’s feeling much better. I even went to karate last night, did some similar exercises (carefully) and managed to only feel significant pain once (when I forgot to do it carefully).

Question is — will I be able to do the yard work this weekend that I really need to do? Though it would make a dandy excuse …

It is with some measure of pride that I report I have sustained a Sports Injury.

Yes, that is sort of akin to saying I was struck by a meteor, or was pickpocketed aboard the Prince of Monaco’s yacht, or am suffering from a post-abduction alien probing. I am not, in short, someone one would expect would ever suffer from a Sports Injury.

But, I fear, I hyperextended by left elbow doing a snap punch in karate.

I am very proud of myself. And, also, in pain.

No idea whether one or the other or both of us will make it (and, if not, that just means we work harder toward the next test). But it was cool doing it — and cool prepping for it together.

Gratz, Kitten!

Congrats to Katherine who won 1st place in kumite (sparring) for her age division at the tournament Saturday. She also did well in kata, winning her first two contests before being knocked out by the person who eventually won 1st.

Very proud. It’s funny — I don’t want her to think that my approval, love, or even pride in her is contingent on her winning — but that she did win does make me want to laud even more praise her.

Wish I could have been there, but …

I’ve noticed something funny recently. That is, I keep finding my hands, and arms, and body doing bits and pieces of karate moves. Nothing that makes me a menace to navigation or anything — no inadvertent spear-thrusts at innocent passersby or alarming the office mates with roundhouse kicks and kiais — but just finding my arms or hands flexing, feeling a desire to “stretch” in the form of a fore-arm block, things like that. It’s as though my body is feeling comfortable with those movements, which is just … odd.

I don’t know that I’ve pursued an interest  — outside the home (or Internet) — this diligently for some time, certainly not one with such a physical component (maybe my old square dancing days are the best precedent). My training classes are something I make a special point to schedule around (and rue when business travel takes me away from them). It’s something special I share with Katherine, too, which is nice. And even though I way too often feel like I have two left feet, I never have to drag myself to the dojo. I want to be there, getting better at it.

Weird.

In upcoming events along this line, our dojo is having its spring tourney on 8 March. Katherine’s competing, as she did last year — but as an orange belt, rather than a white, which is a huge difference (and tremendous progress). I didn’t compete last year (since it was just over a month after I’d started), but I planned on doing so this year — until it ran smack-dab into my Netherlands trip. *sigh*

Later in March, we’ll both learn whether Sensei thinks we’re ready to test for our green belts. I don’t know if I’m ready (or if Katherine’s ready), but I trust Sensei to make that call. Either way, I look forward to it.

Went to karate tonight instead of tomorrow, since tomorrow I’ll off at the Caucus (woo-hoo). I usually go to the Tue/Thu adult class at Lone Tree, but there’s a parallel Mon/Wed class, and Sensei doesn’t care which you go to (as long as you don’t go to more sessions per week than you signed up for).

Well, the Mon/Wed class turns out to be a bit smaller than my usual one. And, um, more homogenous. Four black belts. Six brown belts. Four purple belts. And, way down at the end, looking terribly noobish …one orange belt. Tonight, at least.

Is it in fact, possible to drive from the Lone Tree rec center (at 6:30 p.m.) back to our house, get dressed in my gi (assuming it had been forgotten back at said house), and get back to the rec center in 29 minutes, 55 seconds, just barely making it in time for class to start?

Yes.  Yes, it is.

New Year Resolutions – 2008!

So … some folks consider New Year Resolutions passé.  And, certainly, there’s something to be said for “resolving” every day to do what’s right.  And there’s something to be said against the standard cycle of promises made-and-broken.

That said, I’m a traditionalist, if nothing else, so here are a few to toss out there.  In fact, as reflections of last year, they are, pretty much, an ongoing tradition:

  1. Spend more time with Kitten. Keep up the karate stuff, but also be more involved on a daily basis with her homework and other stuff.  Get that time in before she decides that Daddy is (like New year Resolutions) passé.
  2. Get my virtual world in order.  Get my blogs updated and cleaned up.  Increase traffic to WIST.  Get my photos caught up, including the stuff I have on other sites.
  3. Write. Edit. Write. No real progress with that this past year.  It’s not clear to me how, amidst all the other commitments I have, how to leverage this — but it’s something I really want to do.
  4. Be fit. Repeat the 1,500 miles, keep up the karate — and find a new Geek Diet tool.  Get back under 200 by June, and to 185 by the end of the year.  There are some things I can do toward that end (that are sustainable and rational); I just need to do them.
  5. Ditto for last year’s addendum, of course.

Reasonable plans for the future, stretch goals, or crazy-ass pie-in-the-sky?  I have no idea — but let’s see.

And here’s hoping that for all of you, 2008 is at least as good a year, if not better, and that the New Year brings joy and prosperity to you and yours.  Happy New Year!

New Year Resolutions – 2007 in Review!

So, how did I do with last year’s resolutions for 2007?

Spend at least as much time with Kitten. Preferably more “quality time” — getting her involved with stuff at home, and being more involved in some of her other activities. She’s growing up into a fine young lady that I want to spend time with.

Well, something that was already in the works last year, but which came into fruition in 2007, was the whole karate thing.  That’s been a lot of fun, and good exercise, but most importantly it’s something we’ve been able to share.

Beyond that — I keep trying.  I’m going to call this a hit.

Keep the house in a bit more order — a bit tidier, pursue projects and maintenance a bit more diligently, etc. This is going to mean (gasp) maybe doing a bit less of other activities. These sorts of things work better as routine, so I need to figure out how to do that in a flexible fashion.

We finished up some big projects, but I don’t know that our overall “organization” has gotten any better.  Gotta deem this a miss.

Write. Edit. Write. Yeah, yeah. Need to think of some good strategies here, though, that don’t involved Daily Stuff — because my Daily Stuff queue is pretty much full.

Near zilcho in the writing department.  I’ve been hit-or-miss on the 100 Words stuff, and I set up a special blog to cover things, but it’s just been (despite a novel bubbling in the back of my brain) something I’ve simply not taken the time or energy to pursue.  A disappointing miss.

Be fit. Keep the weight off, exercise more, and walk 1,500 miles to nowhere. Heck, how’s this — drop down to 185 by the end of the year. There’s an (un-)stretch goal for you! Or, more precisely, for me. But one I believe I can reach.

I actually hit my 1,500 miles to nowhere, and in the last few days of the year.  After a very lackadaisical spring and summer, I (ahem) hit my stride and caught up with that.

I also seriously started exercising more (and stretching), via my karate class begun in February.

As to the weight …

Well, the good news is, I did actually get down to below 195 or so in March.  The bad news is, I’ve not been at all diligent about tracking my weight, though still trying to maintain a modicum of good habits (but further hampered by losing my Geek Diet technical platform).  Which means, my 31 December end-of-the-year weigh-in was …. 210 (approximately).

Hrm.

I’m going to call this a hit, if only because I feel like I’m more fit than I was, though I can also feel the pounds regaining.

And, lest I forget, this addendum resolution:

And, it should go without saying (but I say it nonetheless) that I resolve to be the bestest partner, lover, hubby and friend to Margie, the most wonderful woman in the world.

Well, I’ve certainly given that one the ol’ college try, and she keeps telling me I’m doing it, so I have to trust her (admittedly biased) judgment and call this a hit.

So — 3-2, in favor of hits (or even 2.5-2.5 if we split the Fitness one).  That’s not too bad.

Now … what about next year …
