A Selfish Dream

Last night I dreamt I met myself from a parallel universe, and traded him discs for the three Star Wars prequels and Indiana Jones IV in return for the four season sets of Firefly.

I felt very guilty.

Bits and Bobs from 2012-08-06

Olympics

  1. Our unpatriotic Olympians! – Fox Sports commentator critiques US Olympians — especially the gymnasts, especially Gabby — for not wearing the stars and stripes, calling it “soft anti-Americanism.”
  2. Fox Sports, racist? Perish the thought! – Oh, and another Fox Sports commentator sniffs at Serena Williams doing a little dance after her gold medal victory.

Serious stuff

  1. Why, yes, there is an attack on religious freedoms going on here – But it’s not against Christians.
  2. Seeking Sikh – Not a lot of folks know anything about the Sikh religion. It’s a shame that a tragedy like the temple shooting should be the first time people think about it, but better late than never.
  3. Managing managed animal populations – When there are too many animals of a particular breed or breeding line, zookeepers in different countries vary on the best way to control the population.
  4. The Crew of the “Enola Gay” – And their thoughts over the decades about the bombing of Hiroshima.
  5. It’s too darned hot – Heat wave continues in Denver.

Fun stuff

  1. Star Crossed – The connection between Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald.
  2. Advanced planning can help you avoid embarrassing situations – Great idea, faulty execution.
  3. Why do stubbed toes hurt so much? – Because, boy, do they.
  4. Lego “Serenity” is very shiny – Well done!
  5. So make the Bad Horse gleeful, or … – The Evil League of Evil is watching, so beware
  6. I take my paternal model from Calvin’s Dad – But this dad will do in a pinch.
  7. Playing around with Wireless N – My current home networking struggles.
  8. Life insinuates into art – Fun with statuary.
  9. Dumping Daredevil – If Marvel/Disney negotiates to let Fox keep Daredevil (or his film rights) longer, in return for some more Cosmic heroes, that would be a win-win.
  10. Concerted Effort – Kay preparing for a band concert this weekend.

Shiny TV (in, sadly, November)

The big Firefly Reunion at the San Diego Comic-Con will be filmed and rebroadcast (with some added material) … in November.  Bless you SyFy for doing this, and curse you for pulling a Fox-like "let's take a break for a few months before we continue with our story …"

Hey Browncoats, That Comic-Con Firefly Reunion Panel Will be Televised
We mentioned earlier some of the awesome things all us sad not-at-Comic-Con folks will be missing. Well, now you can be marginally less sad! Because it turns out that that Firefly reunion? It’s being filmed. And not just on some grainy flip-cam with sub=par quality so you can half-watch it on youtube later (although we’re sure that’s happening, too). Nope, it’s gonna be on real television, with some more good stuff alongside it.
The panel, which will be moderated by Entertainment Weekly‘s Jef…

The Medium is the Message

Books are not comic books. Comic books are not movies. Movies are not TV shows. TV shows are not stage productions. Stage productions are not books.

There may be some commonality shared between some of these, but it seems to me that one of the big mistakes (from the perspective of comic books) is trying to imitate one medium in another.

You can make successful super-heroics on TV. As noted in the article, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is proof of that. But not by trying to imitate a movie (for reasons both story-telling and budgetary), nor by trying to imitate a comic book (unless it's a comic book that's been very carefully written to have TV sensibilities). You do it, not by making a comic book TV show that turns out to be successful, but by trying to write a successful TV show that is based on a comic book.

(On a somewhat side note, I think this is the biggest failing of Serenity vs. "Firefly" — the movie tried to be an extended TV series episode, only with a bigger budget, and that just doesn't work. It ends up feeling rushed and shallow and too dependent on stuff that a TV audience would remember from the preceding several weeks, but that a movie audience won't understand.)

Brawn vs BRAAAAINS

So, if the three members of your zombie apocalypse team (along with you) are the (a) protagonist from the last thing you read, you watched, and you played … "how screwed are you?"

I'm pretty lucky, I guess: Honor Harrington (from David Weber's space opera book series), Ms. Marvel (from the "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" cartoon), and Velorio (my dual-pistols blaster from City of Heroes ).

So no worries on my part, and a bit of relief it wasn't William McKinley, Patrick Jayne, and … well, the gaming bit is always going to be pretty kick-ass. #ddtb
