Ain’t It Cool News claims:

“Firefly,” Joss Whedon’s widely adored but very cancelled Foxnet space Western, is coming to a DVD player near you — and it’s coming in fabulous widescreen!
According to a never-steered-Herc-wrong-yet source close to the project:
No release date yet, but Fox Home Entertainment will be releasing. It sports the entire season, including the unaired eps, in 16:9 glory and, most likely, in the “correct” order. With lots of goodies.

Doesn’t make up for cancelling the frelling thing, but …

Just in time for the resumption of the last few episodes of Farscape tonight comes the news that UPN is giving Firefly a pass.

According to the Firefly Immediate Assistance page, “According to a 20th Century Fox source, UPN has decided not to pick up Firefly. While the show appealed to them, they didn’t feel it was a good fit with their current programming needs.”

More news, they say, later today.

For those who hadn’t heard, Fox has decided not to buy any more Firefly eps, though work continues on the last ones filmed.

Now, doesn’t that just suck?

Fortunately, neither creator Joss Whedon nor the fan base are giving up, and there’s a decent chance, given the costs and popularity of the show, that some other network (UPN, anyone?) will pick it up. But giving them a bit of encouragement to do so .

Damn, first Farscape, now this. Not a good year for my favorite TV shows.

Firefly will be on hiatus in January.

Which will probably be okay, since it will likely take us that long to watch our tapes of the December episodes, given our schedules.

Still, it’s annoying. The plan from Fox was to move the show to Wednesday nights. At which point, WB announced that they were moving Angel to the same time slot.

While I’m irked that Fox is putting the show into hiatus while figuring out the schedule change, I am gratified that they didn’t just plop Firefly into that time slot anyway. That would have been … unfortunate.

At the same time, momentum is important for shows. Throwing it off the schedule for a month (after a spotty November/December) isn’t going to help attract viewers. And I really want this show to succeed.

Because it’s been too long since I posted something on Firefly

Check out the South Park Firefly drawings. Heh. I like Wash, though Jayne is kind of cool. (via Doyce)…

Friday night, it occured to me (too late for the evening) that my dad might really like Firefly. I mean, what’s not to like, but, really, he’s an old Western watcher from way back.

Saturday night, I thought I’d let the High Priest of Firefly Fandom, Doyce, give my dad a one-paragraph description of the show. That turned into a good hour of discussion and explication, complete with a teaser viewing of the first part of the Friday night episode that Doyce just happened to have brought over for Margie and me to watch some time this week.

Sunday afternoon? Whilst Katherine napped and football games droned on, we and my folks ended up watching the tape …

Now, if only we can all repeat that 10,000 times, we might have a geniune hit on our hands …

Okay, just watch it already. This is a good show, and I don’t want it disappearing on me.

UPDATE: And if you didn’t watch it, you missed a very nice hour of TV. Best ep yet, I’d say. Enough so that I don’t have any hesitation about watching it again with Margie. Like … tomorrow morning?

Watched last week’s Firefly at long last (thanks for the tape, Doyce). Hy-larious, not to mention well done. Too many good lines to count. Yeah, sort of a fluff piece, but, still, we keep getting little details fleshed out about the crew of the good ship Serenity.

(Parenthetically, one cool thing is that we’re beginning to get a feel for where things are on the ship. This is one of the few space series where the ship is small enough for us to get a feel for the spacial relationships between different decks, quarters, the bridge, the cargo bay, etc. And that should only increase over time, which is neat.)

(Also, parenthetically, isn’t it nice that a same-sex seduction scene can be a part of a plotline without being the plotline, and without being “a shocking, very special episode of Firefly”? I think so. I mean, not so long ago, you couldn’t even consider it as part of a plot. Never would have entered anyone’s mind.)

So … after rushing to get done with the tape before the following Friday rolls around … what’s up with Fox preempting the show after only three episodes? (And from what I hear, it’s been worse back east.)

Yes, I realize, Sports Preempts All.

So why is it that shows I like always get plopped in the same time slots as so many sporting events?

Watched Firefly on tape the other night. I was the last one in the room to do so — Doyce having watched the tape twice, and Margie having caught most of it the night before during the broadcast.

I like it.

Sure, the “high concept” of “Exiled ex-Confederates wandering the Old West, righting wrongs and pulling bank heists, only we’ll set it in Outer Space” sounds like it should be the worst dreck out there, and handled by anyone else besides Joss Whedon (or Joe Straczynski), it would be. But I found the premiere episode to be fresh, interesting, exciting, amusing, and certainly enough to get me coming back for more.

(Interestingly, this was evidently not the pilot episode, which was a two hour effort that will be shown later in the season. Nor was it the succeeding first episode, which was also shelved. Which is really funny, because this still felt like a pilot/first episode, though in a good way.)

I am still seriously torqued about Farscape, but if the SF gods are handing us Firefly instead for our Friday night viewing (or taping) pleasure, I can live with that. I guess.
