When brand names become generic

I knew about these past cases of brand names and trademarks become generic — it's one of the dangers of being incredibly successful in your field of business.  The disturbing thing is the list of products in danger of being genericized — in that I had no idea with a couple of them that they were actual brand names, and the trademark holders should probably be disturbed by that.

15 Product Trademarks That Have Become Victims Of Genericization
Sometimes, we hurt the ones we love. Which is why even if we didn’t mean to be so harsh, many products we use every day have become the victims of trademark genericization, meaning they’ve morphed …

The scariest sports picture you will see today

Archaeologists a thousand years hence will be fascinated and repelled by the strange, unearthly deities we worshiped.

So Many Mascots
This might be the greatest collection of baseball talent ever gathered in one place. Twenty-six mascots posed for a class photo yesterday in Minneapolis, delighting and horrifying onlookers in equal measure.

Nightmarish Adverts

Such as the one below for Landru Syrup …

Makes me wonder what ads of today will be highlighted in the Cracked of 2064.  Hopefully all the ones I dislike today.

Good thing syrup pours slow. Because these black-eyed waifs will murder you soon’s the jug’s empty.

The oldest logos in the world

A fun look at some of the oldest corporate logos still (more or less) being used, along with notes about their origins.  I have to say, I had absolutely no idea about Shell's origin.

For the Manly McManlyson in your family

"I love the smell of Bearglove in the morning. It smells like victory."

Wow. I hope I'm never so insecure that I have to demonstrate my manliness to myself (or sleepover guests) by buying "Wolfthorn" or "Swagger" for my body soap.

(Side note: in English, all five of these are "Body Wash," but for our Quebec brethren, the first four are "Nettoyant Pour Le Corps," and the right-hand one is "Gel Douche" — wonder why.)

Vintage Soda Cans

What's fascinating about these (aside from suddenly wanting to try an old Cactus Cooler) is that the script on them is all horizontal (or, in a couple of cases, a mild jaunty angle), while today large vertical script seems more the rule, esp. on Coke products.

Also, yay for self-contained pop-tops, and not needing a churchkey.

That terrible "Guardians of the Galaxy" poster

A detailed analysis of how this poster throws away everything we know about what makes a good movie poster.

(On the bright side, Disney isn't posting take-down notices about copies of the poster, vs. copies of the trailer.)

Warner Bros. Logos

While the WB shield has been, in various incarnations, the mainstay, the Warner Bros. / Seven Arts logo is also iconic for those of us of an age, and the Saul Bass "W" as well.  Very cool.

The Bakery/Restaurant Formerly Known as Udi's

Love their bread, and their restaurants are pretty tasty, too. Hope the short-term profit isn't overwhelmed by the loss of name recognition.

Reshared post from +The Denver Post

Udi's is looking for a new name. After selling the name along with its gluten-free and granola products, the remaining bakery and restaurant chain needs a new brand, and they're looking for help. Winning submissions will earn gift certificates or even a $1,000 private party.

Stock Feminism

This is actually kind of funny — in a "hmmm, should I be chuckling over this, or grinding my teeth?" kind of way. On the one hand, it is stock photography, which is almost always gooftastic. On the other hand, that means it's the imagery being used in all sorts of professional magazines (and websites) associated with feminism, which is sending some sort of message to at least someone. (h/t Charlie Stross)

How to be a feminist according to stock photography
Ladies, you may think you’re feminists, but it turns out you’re probably doing it all wrong… The folks over at NY Mag use a lot of stock photos in their business. They also have a lot to say about women’s rights. So naturally, from time to time, they use…

Cool…

No, really, go with the professional design

Because while professionals sometimes get it wrong, amateur designs are rarely as good as people think they should be.  "How hard can it be?" "We'll let someone try for free."

The new Colorado tourism logo (https://hill-kleerup.org/blog/2013/08/31/cologorado.html) has is flaws (though I think it is a lot better, especially as a branding label, than people think at first glance) but these "See, even my students could come up with something better" are pretty uniformly hideous, over-busy, poorly proportioned, and dubiously executed.

Remember, folks, this isn't flying on flags or emblazoning uniforms — it's a branding logo for posters and commercials and the like, a unifying design element for publicity campaigns rather than a strikingly complex piece of art in its own right.

Metro State students step up after controversy with new Colorado logo
You ll recall that the state of Colorado s new logo — created by a team of big-name marketing and design professionals — was unveiled a few weeks ago to mixed reviews.

And then she turns into the Phoenix and blows up the planet

I'd like to think that, if I were there, and I hadn't spotted the wires I would hopefully be looking for — then I'd be watching more fascinated than frightened (even while thinking to myself, "Y'know, if this were in the comics, this whole scene would probably end badly for the bystanders.").

Apparently trolling random strangers is the new marketing for the 21st century. I guess that's one advantage to having so many gullible people out there.

That said, I did find this amusing.
