Night before last: Down to Newport for the boat parade, in conjunction with a big Stanford alumni shindig at a house that sits right on the water. (Margie’s folks and mine are both alums, so we get come, too.) Lots of brightly lit and decorated boats parading around the harbor, lots of good food and drink.

Last night: Sort of the opposite. Some other friends of the Ks invited us down to a tailgate party at a Long Beach Marina, during which we took turns taking a boat out into the byways and canals of Naples (no kidding), wherein multi-zillion dollar houses were brightly decorated for the holidays.

Today: Brunch, Return of the King. Huzzah!

Well, actually it’s an interview with John Rhys-Davies — but a fine interview it is, talking about dwarves, the movies, his career, Tolkien, and some geopolitical stuff. Interesting.

But what are the books? Something’s quite nice, and then something bad goes wrong, and then there’s a fight, and then something gets worse, and then there’s a bigger fight, and then things look really bad, and then there’s a battle, and then things look really really bad, and then there’s a bigger battle, and then things look REALLY really bad. That’s the structure of the damn thing. And you can’t have that mounting tension all the way through. So we needed to find ways of releasing the tension. And we decided that Gimli was probably the way to do it. Because there’s something innately funny about Gimli.

I’m not sure I agree with the Gimli-as-humorous-relief — but he’s probably done more thinking about it than I have, and he certainly seems to have accepted it.

Enough already!

I have not seen Return of the King yet. I am not likely to see RotK until sometime this weekend. I don’t want to hear about it. I don’t want…

I have not seen Return of the King yet.

I am not likely to see RotK until sometime this weekend.

I don’t want to hear about it. I don’t want to read about it. I don’t want to hear or read how RotK fever is sweeping the globe, and even normally staid institutions and snooty film critics are calling it the film of the year, validating every geeky fanboy who ever wrote his name out in Tengwar.

So shut up, okay? Just shut up!

Thank you. I feel better.

That about says it all. Well, along with an excerpt, at least:

FRODO:
Would you like some bread and jam?
GANDALF:
I do not want your bread and jam.
I’m busy being mad at Sam.
He likes to sneak. He likes to spy.
I’ll grind him up for hobbit pie!
FRODO:
Oh, do not grind him up for pie!
He is a pretty handy guy.
He mows my grass. He paints my gate.
He is my friend. We both are straight.

“Honey, sometime this weekend …” [Sit down next to her.]

“Yes, Dave?”

“I’d like to … do something … thrilling. [Take her hand.] Moving. Something to fill the senses, engulf the mind … [Nuzzle her neck.] … something that I’ve been waiting for … for so long … [Kiss her] together, just the two of us, something wonderful, marvelous, thrilling …”

“Yeeeessss?”

For those who didn’t order it via Amazon.com back in October with Super-Saver Free Shipping, The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) (Widescreen) is out today. An extra 43 minutes of Middle-Earthian goodness, along with all the other 90 hours of documentary stuff.

Ah, well, just as well — I don’t have any free time to watch it this week, anyway.

Next in the release queue: Firefly and Pirates of the Caribbean

Bits of success

Though the day started off with Kitten getting up too early, and with a phone call that my Spycraft game on Sunday had to be postponed because of Justin’s football season-ender dinner thang (Go, Moose!), there were plenty of little successes in it. Two in particular:

1. I think this is the quickest I have returned the garage into two-car-edness after a visit from Jim and Ginger. The remains of the project have sat there for multiple months at a time (usually, but not always, because there’s more project for me to do).

What made this time faster than previous was that (a) I didn’t want my new car sitting out on the driveway, and (b) Margie seriously didn’t want to be getting in and out of the van on the driveway.

2. When hit up by Katherine for a story for our trip to Home Depot, I hit upon the perfect story: “The Story of Shishiko, the Little Cat Girl, and How She Met Prince Menho.” This is the “origin tale” of my Oriental Adventures character, and it was just perfect, as was the sequel, “The Story of Shishiko and the Mean Guard.” I’m actually thinking of writing them up as real bed-time books for her, maybe even with illustrations.

Hey, didn’t Tolkien get started that way?

I’m certainly sorry to hear that John Rhys-Davies was badly injured during the filming of a mini-series.

I have no idea whether suit has merit, but it’s certainly unkind and unfair that the versatile JRD is now utterly type-cast — at least so far as headline writers are concerned. Hopefully he can overcome that, since it’s not a role that has a lot of demand for it.

I think I’ve seen one Star Wars movie. I did go to see The Lord of the Rings, but I fell asleep five minutes into the film and didn’t wake up until the credits were rolling. Was that wrong of me?

No, just a sign that you’re a bad reporter with a stupid editor. Ah, well.

Vin Diesel recently outed himself as a D&D player on Conan O’Brien.

Vin: Very few people know that I was rolling 20-sided dice and talking like a half-orc
Conan: You would talk in the voice when you played the game?
Vin: Oh, we completely role-played, yea.
Conan: *laughs* you’re kidding?!
Vin: (in the voice of a half-orc) “How dare you!?”
Conan: That’s amazing! (in a nerdy voice) “Fear not, Gandalf is on the way!”
audience: *laughs*
Conan: That’s what I would be, if I was playing with you. You would not let me play with you, probably. You’d be like “that guy’s too nerdy, he’s gotta go.”
audience: *laughs*
Conan: So you played this for like how long?
Vin: For like 24 years.

Hell, that’s longer than I’ve been gaming.

(Interestingly, this is a slightly different version of “Dark Dungeons” than the version I’ve linked to before. In particular, the “preaching” pages at the end have different passages, including the reminder to burn all that nasssty Tolkien and Lewis crapola, too.)
