  • Been having fun watching the 2006 "Legion of Super-Heroes" cartoon series (incl. a brief turn by @wilw as Cosmic Boy). Good stuff. #

Trying to give some animated perspective to my daughter

So I'm trying to explain to my daughter why the "Star Trek" animated series was such an incredibly awesome thing to people who were starved for "Star Trek" (or any TV SF taken seriously) in a world before VCRs and DVDs and DVRs and cable and the like.

Having only seen one episode of it ("More Tribbles, More Troubles"), she just wasn't getting it.

Which made me come up with the analogy of a "Lord of the Rings" animated series, of all-new stories, half-hour in length, with really crude Filmation animation, and all the content restrictions of Saturday morning cartoons.

That got the picture across to her. And also gave her an incurable case of the giggles. "That means they couldn't do the drinking contest. Mwah-ha-ha-ha!"

Bingo. But she'd still watch it. Heck, so would I. #ddtb

Scooby-Doo and Skepticism

Very cool article below on how Scooby-Doo (in most of its incarnations over the decades) has taught a powerful lesson about skepticism and rejection of knee-jerk fear and superstition. And why (and here I fully agree) it never quite works in those few versions of the show where the supernatural is real, and not some cranky or money-grubbing farmer with a rubber mask.

(Also, I echo his appreciation for Mystery, Inc. — very fun show, and fairly sophisticated for Scooby-Doo.) #ddtb

I'm Batman!

I was less than enthused when Batman: The Brave and the Bold debuted. For me, Batman: The Animated Series was (and remains) the ultimate Batman cartoon.

And yet, over time, the show grew on me with its zany take on Silver Age Bat-jinx. It took justice seriously while still incorporating some (many) of the madcap aspects of Batman of the 50s-60s.

It's been a show (and comic book) that the whole family has enjoyed. Well done, people. #ddtb

Jonny Quest … in 3-D!

Well, kinda.  Roger D. Evans has made a faboo reconstruction of the main titles of the old Hanna-Barbera cartoon Jonny Quest, using stop motion figures (which gives some lovely depth and the ability to do some fun panning in some scenes).  It is a joy to watch if you remember the original.

(Click the link above if the Vimeo player doesn’t work on your browser.)

For those who actually need a comparison to the original (if you ignore some unfortunate Portuguese voice-overs …):

JQ was my favorite cartoon growing up, and I introduced them to my daughter on DVD when she was old enough to watch (all political correctness aside). I’ve always been a big fan of JQ’s Hoyt Curtin jazz music, and the heavy-ink (even if limited animation) Doug Wildey art. I even liked the theme-and-variation music on the “Real Adventures” reboot. The stop-motion version just adds some extra wow to the equation. Great stuff.

Dodd-Frank via Schoolhouse Rock

As a fan of both The Daily Show and Schoolhouse Rock, this TDS piece on the travails of the Dodd-Frank Bill (Financial Reform bill that barely passed Congress, and which has been savaged since by the GOP and only lightly defended by the Democrats) is outrageously good.  I laughed. A lot.

“Legend of Korra” trailer from SDCC

The San Diego Comic-Con also premiered a trailer for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel, Legend of Korra.

This looks really good — some good ATLA call-outs, but also its own stylistic elements. We don’t really get a feel for any of the characters or plot or anything — but it looks good.

Unfortunately, we still have a year to wait …

  4. How the Deficit Got This Big – NYTimes.com – “A few lessons can be drawn from the numbers. First, the Bush tax cuts have had a huge damaging effect. If all of them expired as scheduled at the end of 2012, future deficits would be cut by about half, to sustainable levels. Second, a healthy budget requires a healthy economy; recessions wreak havoc by reducing tax revenue. Government has to spur demand and create jobs in a deep downturn, even though doing so worsens the deficit in the short run. Third, spending cuts alone will not close the gap. The chronic revenue shortfalls from serial tax cuts are simply too deep to fill with spending cuts alone. Taxes have to go up.” It’s not that difficult, except that politics are trumping reality. And, ultimately, reality will bite back.
