Looking for remote access ideas

I know that there have been a variety of remote access tools put out in the public arena in the last few years, and I'd like to crowdsource my vast studio audience for recommendations.

In particular, I'm looking for something that can be put on parental PCs that would allow their remote tech support resource (me) to see and interact with their desktop at some time other than when visiting for the holidays or by voice interface over the phone.

Ideas? Recommendations?

The evening after the day before

After the events of yesterday, we had a very quiet, very pleasant evening.

Margie made her and I some caipirinhas.  Later, I fixed myself another one, then put stuff away. That left her without seconds, so I mixed her a gimlet, which was well-received.

We ate in — ordered in Chinese from our favorite local local place, Wild Basil.

We watched some TV from the DVR and DVD — "Agents of SHIELD," "Almost Human," "Babylon 5," "Big Bang Theory".  We joked and laughed and chitted and chatted.

Then, at length, we went to sleep.

A nice evening, and worth sharing for what strikes me as one.

And now for some musical holiday cheer

Kay (on the left) at the band field trip to Flatiron Crossing. She’s playing lead on the second tune.

UPDATE: The G+ video didn’t transfer to my blog properly, so I’ve embedded the YouTube version that I uploaded.

The Doctor Is Out (Trick-or-Treating)

Kay as the 10th Doctor. Only with longer hair.

Your tech support "cheat sheet" for all occasions

Not that there's any intentional, conscious link between my posting this and my parents and in-laws both being in town for a visit.

And, yeah, this is pretty much what I do.

The Phones! The Phones!

Yes, it’s that time again, when Verizon contracts are up and a young girl (or two)’s heart turns toward … NEW PHONES!

Margie’s new Moto X (though hers is white).

First up, Margie, who’s been sporting a Moto Droid X2 since, well, forever (or, at least, December 2011). For her, we got a Moto X, which is just out for Verizon and has been getting some great press as a solid mid-level phone that’s designed to be very Google-centric (no Motorola-imposed skins).  It’s about the same size as her old one, but a lot thinner.  While AT&T has a special deal for getting them in various color combinations, Verizon doesn’t (yet) — she still went with the white (vs. black) one, along with a sporty purple case and a new Blue Tooth headphone.

The Cunning Master Plan was that this would free up Margie’s Droid X2 to go to Kay, who’s been using a dumb phone feature phone — an LG Cosmos 2 — since that same shopping trip (well, since Christmas 2011).  I’ve long wanted her to get a smartphone, for a variety of reasons.

Well, she felt the Droid X2 was too big.  She ends up carrying her phone in her pants pocket, not being a purse-toting sort of lady as yet, so something too big, with the kind of jeans she wears, was problematic.

Kay’s Mono Mini

So, after much huffing and puffing from the Father Unit, she ended up getting a Moto Droid Mini, which fits in the pants and gives her smartphoney goodness.

The really hard part being, of course, not grabbing the phone out of her hands to show her how it all works and how to make it particularly (in my view) all spiffy.  Not that Kay’s at all willing to put up with that.

And thus, here we all are, a big Motorola Android Smartphone family.

My own phone doesn’t come due for replacement until February. Hmmmm ….

(As a special note, the Verizon store in Lone Tree by Park Meadows remains a fine place, and our customer rep (Angie? Angela?) was both helpful and not all that pushy. Made what could have been a contentious experience relatively pleasant.)

End of a Family Era

My Uncle Al passed away this week.  He was actually my Great-Uncle, the last of my Nona's many brothers.  We weren't what I'd call close, but we exchanged cards each Christmas, handshakes and hugs whenever we met (sadly, most recently, as other family members of that era passed away), and he was family.

Oddly, one of my clearest memories of Uncle Al was at a milestone birthday for my bisnonna (great-grandmother, the Marianna mentioned below), when I was fairly young. The brothers were all jokers to one degree or another, and it was Al who suggested I smell the lovely frosting rose on Bis Nona's birthday cake.  Hilarity (and a frosting facial) ensued.

It's funny how little I knew about him, aside from his presence.  He was a lumberjack? He served on the USS Wayne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Wayne_(APA-54) )? All things I didn't know, or, if I knew, never rose above the level of background noise I didn't really consider.  He was my Uncle Al — that was enough.

It's very strange, even a little disconcerting, to think of that generation of immediate family now being gone. They were a constant part of the ambiance of my childhood, and now are just pictures, just memories.

But good ones.

Happy Anniversary, Mom & Dad

Have a great day! You're an inspiration to us.

On our plane. Weird flying wit…

On our plane. Weird flying with just Kay. Miss Margie already (she’ll be joining us in a few days).

A Happy Fathers Day

I was given gifts, I was fed with food and drink (and drink), I was complemented on my teaching of the geekiness, and assured I was the best Dad ever. I was also gifted with a Blu-Ray of the first Hobbit film, and strongly encouraged to watch same with the family.

Hard to beat that.

CONNNNNNNNNN!

Rattling about

After two-plus months of Jackie and Kaylee staying here, and then a week of my parents … not only are they gone, but Margie's off on travel, and Kay's off at summer school.

Leaving me here.  All alone.

And it's raining.

Next up: the lights go out, I fumble in the basement with a flashlight, and most likely get eaten by a grue. Or chased by zany burglars.

Big management meetings over. …

Big management meetings over. Looking forward to being home. San Diego is lovely, but miss the family.

Happy Mothers Day!

If I could have, I would have … 🙂

Thanks for everything, Mom!

Huzzahs and Kudos to the Girl!

Kay brought home a note today, saying that, having been identified by the middle school staff as "a strong leader and a role model for our school," she's being invited to be part of the Orientation/Mentor Program group.

This team, in 8th Grade (next year for her), helps transition new 6th Graders (and their parents) into middle school. She'll meet with them prior to school starting, give tours, brief the new kids on how to open their lockers, mentor them, and all that jazz.  They were a great help when Kay was moving from elementary into middle school, and it's very cool that she's been recognized as someone who can do that thing.

Plus, a free t-shirt!
