Margie made an insanely good praline sauce recipe for the Forty Days finale a week ago. We broke it out last night for the cheesecake, though it went just fine with the chocolate torte. Or, as we discovered, as a cookie-dipping sauce. Yum.

Faboo time with the Testerfolk, Randy, Stan, and Jackie’s friend Angie. Preliminary snacks by Randy, then ham, potatoes, some nice dinner and dessert (and hors d’oevre) wine, and amazing cheesecake and chocolate tort stuff (from Jackie) with toppings by Margie. An occasion to break out the good china, silver, and crystal, and to have a good time. Most excellent.

Needless to say, I utterly blew any semblance of diet this week, in aggregate.

Everyone bailed around 7:45 so they could get home to watch Alias. Ha, ha, ha. Just as well, because I’m ready to crash …

So, what are all the Well-Heeled Geeks getting their wives for their anniversary?

  1. A “Huzzah!” mug.
  2. A “I spent my reward on Ale and Whores!” tee.
  3. Romance Refrigerator Magnets.
  4. The first two series of Coupling (BBC).

So remember, guys — girls love geeky gifts! They’ll even (giggle-wheeze-snort) let you kiss them!

Per Comics Buyer’s Guide #1588, Way of the Rat and Captain Marvel have both been cancelled.

The former has never quite lived up to the jollity of the first story arc, but was still jolly fun (I’ll miss Po-Po, the sarcastic talking monkey). The latter wasn’t everyone’s cuppa, but was at least as entertaining an examination of Absolute Power and Madness as any other average book on the stands out there. I’ll miss both of them from my weekly pull list.

But so it goes.

Played my first session of Sorcerer last night, courtesy of Doyce (write there to follow, no doubt). As a highly narrative system, it’s perhaps not surprising that the mechanics didn’t stand out overly in my mind. The general setting (sorcery = binding of demons, with the inevitable conflicts, costs, and challenge to one’s humanity) is a good one, and the opportunity for the players to be jointly screwed by both the GM and themselves is tremendous fun.

My own character — Ken Osato, suspiciously successful programmer/entrepreneur with the rat-bastard Type A father who actually got him into the sorcery biz in the first place — was confronted (by my own doing) with my dad dying on my doorstep, a place he oughtn’t to have been. Over the course of the evening, Ken got to be snarky to the 911 operator, unfeeling to the cops, and alternately solicitous and irksome to his two younger sisters.

Oh, yeah, and be tempted to try to bind the amulet demon that Dad had on him for my own purposes, some of which include whether or not to contest my uncle’s inevitable attempt to take over Dad’s company.

There are various dire ways that this could be tied into Randy and Jackie’s storyline. We’ll see which one Doyce chooses (inevitably the most interesting and discomfitting).

Very successful.

JLUBig changes for the Justice League cartoon are coming with the new season. Gone are the two-part episodes and the core team. Instead, we have Justice League Unlimited.

The Justice League animated series is going to get bigger very quickly. Before the opening theme of the season opener of Justice League Unlimited, viewers will be treated to more than 60 heroes. “We’ve got a heckuva lot more characters, pretty much a full roster of DC heroes,” director Joaquim Dos Santos told The Continuum last weekend at Wizard World Los Angeles. “It’s pretty much going to be bigger and badder. It’s going to be huge.
“The opening teaser a huge shot of the interior of the Watchtower and it’s literally just packed with every character you can imagine. I know it’s going to be a pause-fest going on, where people are picking out heroes.”
Dos Santos, who shares directing duties with Dan Riba, said he’s already worked on five episodes for the upcoming seaosn. While he can’t reveal too many details, he did tell The Continuum how the new season will work.
“They’ve done away with the two-part format. It’s just 30-minute episodes,” he said. “The way it works out there’s a core group, and they’ll take a team of two or three other heroes on an adventure with them. There’s basically a team leader and then the new guys on the team, the rookies.
“Other than that, there’s no real format. It can kind of go anyway in wants.”

Hrm. While my Inner Geeky Fanboy capers and frolics at the possibilties, I’ll also miss th more intense characterization that could be done with the current seven characters over the course of an hour. My concern is that we’ll end up with more zap-bang-swoosh, and fewer moments that do more than scratch the surface.

Which has its own charm, of course, but I’ve been enjoying the present format. Ah, well.

Margie was delayed by traffic getting home, but aside from that, it was a wonderful evening.

Drove up to Le Central, our favorite area restaurant. A very nice Chateauneuf-du-pape to wash down some excellent food and wide-ranging conversation. A wet, if still swift ride back home, Brief conversation with Jackie (who was watching after Kitten). A glass of tawny port. Opening of gifts. A bit of healthy exercise. And to sleep.

Blew the hell out of my calorie-watching, but who cares?

Sounds like a good day not to be at work

Winter Storm Watch Issued For The Urban Corridor For Tonight Through Saturday Morning…
Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through the afternoon. By sunset… gusty northeast winds will usher in much colder air to the area and the precipitation will change over to snow. Due to strong upslope flow… the snow will be heavy at times in areas near the foothills and in the southern suburbs near the Palmer Divide. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches will be possible in these areas… with substantially lesser amounts east of I-25. The snow will be heavy and wet… causing a sizable threat to outdoor vegetation.

Of course, that could mean three flakes and two drops for us, but it makes me glad I have today off.

Because the best way to bring people to God and to show that Easter is about Jesus Christ is, of course, to show the Easter Bunny being flogged and breaking Easter Eggs.

Riiiiiiight.

A church trying to teach about the crucifixion of Jesus performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs, upsetting several parents and young children.
People who attended Saturday’s performance at Glassport’s memorial stadium quoted performers as saying, “There is no Easter bunny,” and described the show as being a demonstration of how Jesus was crucified.
Melissa Salzmann, who took her 4-year-old son J.T., said the program was inappropriate for young children. “He was crying and asking me why the bunny was being whipped,” Salzmann said.

Of course, I’m not sure about the wisdom of taking your 4-year-old to a show that is “trying to teach about the crucifixion of Jesus.” And if it was held at a memorial stadium and only “several” parents and kids were upset, it may be a bit overblown of an incident.

But still … tacky, at the very least.

Okay, I’m a Christian, and I’ve dabbled in philosophy, so I should recognize the word. And I’ve done a lot of hobby-related work with Classical Langauges, like Greek, so I should recognize it from that perspective, too.

But whenever I see business with names like this, I’m always thinking of folks standing around, open-mouthed and slack-jawed, which is not quite what I think they’re alluding to.

Volokh has a good thought exercise on what alternative outcomes the DoJ Smut Crackdown will lead to:

  1. The crackdown on porn is doomed to be utterly ineffective in its stated goals of preventing the supposedly harmful effects of porn on its viewers, and on the viewers’ neighbors.
  2. The crackdown on porn will be made effective — by implementing a comprehensive government-mandated filtering system run by some administrative agency that constantly monitors the Net and requires private service providers to block any sites that the agency says are obscene.
  3. The War on Smut will be made effective by prosecuting, imprisoning, and seizing the assets of porn buyers.

[…]So, supporters of the Justice Department’s plans, which do you prefer — #1, #2, or #3? Note that I’m not asking whether porn is bad, or whether porn should be constitutionally protected. I’m certainly not asking whether we’d be better off in some hypothetical porn-free world (just like no sensible debate about alcohol, drug, or gun policy should ask whether we’d be better off in some hypothetical alcohol-, drug-, or gun-free world). I’m asking: How can the government’s policy possibly achieve its stated goals, without creating an unprecedentedly intrusive censorship machinery, one that’s far, far beyond what the Justice Department is talking about right now.

Worth thinking about.
