Well, poop. Joss Whedon is off of Wonder Woman.

You (hopefully) heard it here first: I’m no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My chest… so tight! Okay, stay calm and I’ll explain as best I can. It’s pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.

Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that’s never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don’t think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim
a little bit, but others may have differing views.

The worst thing that can happen in this scenario is that the studio just keeps hammering out changes and the writer falls into a horrible limbo of development. These guys had the clarity and grace to skip that part. So I’m a free man.

Well, sorta. There is that “Goners” movie I can finally finish polishing, and plenty of other things in the hopper I’ve wanted to pursue. I’m as relieved as I am disappointed, and both of those things lead to drink, so that’s a plus. Truly, you may be hearing some interesting things brewing in the coming months. But all potential jets therein will be visible.

But most importantly, I never have to answer THAT question again!!!! And you don’t have to link to every rumor site! Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistant front-runner. I didn’t have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script. (No! Rim! There was rim!) That’s the greatest relief of all. I can do interviews again!

Almost two years since the original announcement.

It may turn out to be a fine movie — but I’m really sorry Joss isn’t the one doing it.

I have successfully updated my Amazon wish list, for those as have inquired.

I have also updated Katherine’s wish list. As a broader description, stuff she is really into right now includes:

  1. Stuffed animals.
  2. Dolls.
  3. READING. The girl is a reading fool. Books are always good.
  4. Science. (Magic School Bus, in book or video, is always welcome.)
  5. Word puzzles.
  6. Puzzle puzzles. More pieces than you would think (though intentionally hard ones, maybe not.)
  7. Games. She has a junior Monopoly that she enjoys, she’s learning chess and likes checkers.
  8. Arts and crafts.

Pink is no longer a must-have in clothing, and she’s also decided that jeans are cool. She’s wearing a size 6 these days, and M where not sized. She’ll always grow into something bigger.

Bling and stickers and decorative things like that are welcome.

Her hair is getting longer, so hair clips/ties/ponytailers of various types are cool.

Anything that would help her organize her room would be welcome by us. 🙂 (Though, to be fair, it’s not like she’s learned any good lessons from us.)

Character-wise, she’s enjoying Looney Tunes these days, and Tom & Jerry. Scooby-Doo is holding steady. The various Disney princesses are still highly rated, and she expressed interest in the new Disney Fairies stuff. Barbie seems to have diminished a bit. Cute stuffed animals are always, always welcome (to join the menagerie she already has). Various super-heroes (Justice League, Teen Titans, Legion of Super Heroes) are also things she really enjoys watching (yay!).

The stuff I have on her list is specific, but in a lot of cases general stuff of the same genre is good, too.

I’ll continue updating things out there as long as she keeps making suggestions.

Margie has a wish list, too, but she doesn’t spend a lot of time keeping it up. You’ll have to ask her what she wants. 🙂

So we’ve finally been getting around to watching the new Legion of Super-Heroes cartoon, on the “CW.” We missed Ep. 1, but have caught 2-3.

Well, Kitten likes it — as do I. The animation style is (sorry, Avo) as stylized as the above indicates — a bit more conventional than Teen Titans, a bit more stylish than BTAS or STAS. The stories have been straightforward action/teen/comic bookish fare — nothing spectacular, but nothing to cringe at.

The folks above match the team members as I’ve seen them. Phantom Girl (not much to say about her), Braniac-5 (half annoying genius kid brother, half Transformer), Saturn Girl (who’s a decent martial artist and TK type in addition to being a telepath), Lightning Lad (rough, gruff, and wise-cracking team leader), Timber Wolf (whose origin story we got), Bouncing Boy (jovial pilot), and Superman.

Um … yeah … Superman. That’s who the Legion went back in time to get, but went back a bit too far. But evidently the name Superboy is never actually mentioned, possibly due to legal issues.

Whatever. He’s the boy version, a bit callow, but still the super-hero.

Many other heroes have, or will, appear, but that’s the “core team” from the two eps I’ve seen.

Good stuff. Look forward to more of it.

Evidently there’s a new version — not just a “director’s cut,” but an “original director’s version” — of Superman II being planned for a release for the holiday season this year. It’s based on Richard Donner’s original work on the movie, prior to his being canned by the Salkinds and replaced by Richard

Lester, which (so it’s said) not only led to a near-revolt by the actors (Hackman refused to film any more) but to a movie with a much more humorous (even camp) tone to it.

Interesting.

Right about the time that I saw the Legion of Super-Heroes episode of JLU (a few weeks back), I read that there was a Legion of Super-Heroes series in the works. Yay!

Interestingly, though, based on this picture (reduced right), there’s no link between the JLU LoSH and the series LoSH. Instead, the line-up has changed some and we have much more Teen Titans-like art.

Which isn’t necessarily bad or good, just sort of curious. Though I’ll miss Supergirl, vs. Superboy.

One can argue over which version of costumes (or team line-up) is more canonically true to the comic until one’s blue in the face — but the comic has gone through so many reboots post-Crisis that you could make them all monkeys dressed up in clown suits and you could probably find a reboot that worked with that.

According to the associated article:

Series producer James Tucker, who was a producer on Justice League Unlimited, explained the look of the show for The Continuum.

“Artistically, the style of the show falls somewhere between Superman: The animated series and Clone Wars,” Tucker told The Continuum. “It’s definitely not anime-based at all.”

Asked about villains on the series, Tucker said, “It’s safe to say that the Fatal Five will be showing up several times, as well as a few other well known Legion foes.”

Looking forward to it.

The trailer is loose for the upcoming movie

Overall impressions?

  1. Gutsy yet very satisfying move to not simply reboot the movie series, but return to it (ignoring the last couple of Reeves Reeve films, thankfully). Supes has been … away? Why? Why is he back now? And can he and the world still fit together? Nice.
  2. I never believed a man could fly. Now … well, I believe CGI can make a man do anything. The fx look nice. Let’s see if the story lives up to them. Lex, at least, seems fun.

  3. It is amusing (and irksome) that both Superman and Lois Lane look (unrealistically) younger now than they did then. Indeed, he looks about the same age as he does on Smallville.

  4. Given the slightly darker tone of the film, I can live with the darker tone of the costume. Still not happy with the belt buckle and boots, but the ads don really highlight them.

Interest level: moderately high

THE GOOD: A Teen Titans DTV release (Teen Titans Tokyo) is coming. A Legion of Super-Heroes animated series is coming. Teen Titan, Justice League, and Superman: The Animated Series DVD sets are coming.

THE BAD: Justice League Unlimited wraps up this year. Waah. At least DVDs of that are coming, too.

THE UGLY: A Superman: The Animated Series DTV movie (Superman: Braniac Attacks) is coming. The part-good is the return of the STAS voice artists for Lois (Dana Delany) and Supes (Tim Daly). The bad is Powers Booth replacing Clancy Brown as Luthor. The downright ugly is Lance Henrickson as a shouting, growling Braniac (replacing Corey Burton’s unnaturally calm computer voice). Bleah. I’m holding off pre-ordering this. See (and hear) the trailer here.

John Scalzi, who’s just publishing the Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies, puts out the canon of most significant SF films:

All of this is designed to be both interesting and informative, but the part of the book that’s going to get most people’s attention — and raise hackles — is The Canon, which features the 50 science fiction films I have deemed to be the most significant in the history of film. Note that “most significant” does not mean “best” or “most popular” or even “most influential.” Some of the films may be all three of these, but not all of them are — indeed, some films in The Canon aren’t objectively very good, weren’t blockbusters and may not have influenced other filmmakers to any significant degree. Be that as it may, I think they matter — in one way or another, they are uniquely representative of some aspect of the science fiction film experience.

Scalzi had final say on the list (reasons for each are in the book), but he solicited input from others. His list (with the ones I’ve seen in bold):

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!
Akira
Alien
Aliens

Alphaville
Back to the Future
Blade Runner
Brazil

Bride of Frankenstein
Brother From Another Planet
A Clockwork Orange
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Contact
The Damned
Destination Moon
The Day The Earth Stood Still

Delicatessen
Escape From New York
ET: The Extraterrestrial

Flash Gordon: Space Soldiers (serial)
The Fly (1985 version)
Forbidden Planet
Ghost in the Shell
Gojira/Godzilla
The Incredibles
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 version)
Jurassic Park
Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior
The Matrix

Metropolis
On the Beach
Planet of the Apes (1968 version)
Robocop
Sleeper

Solaris (1972 version)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

The Stepford Wives
Superman
Terminator 2: Judgement Day

The Thing From Another World
Things to Come
Tron

12 Monkeys
28 Days Later
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
2001: A Space Odyssey

La Voyage Dans la Lune
War of the Worlds (1953 version)

An interesting list. One could do worse than bringing those along on desert island exercise.

Was reading a recent ish of the Comics Buyers Guide, interviewing Dwayne McDuffie — long-time comics writer, then JL writer, now presently producer on Justice League Unlimited. In the course of the interview, he mentioned that JLU has actually be renewed for another season. Great news, which I’d not heard before (though there are already news/rumors/spoilers out on the Web, now that I look for them).

Going to be hard to top this past season’s arcs and finale, though.

Ran across this. Drool …

Seasons 1 and 2 of Justice League. All episodes on DVD. $80.

Except …

… well, looking up the EmpricalFilm.com domain, it’s a Canadian company (I think), using an Austrialian DNS server. There’s no direct contact information. There are some … oddities in the spelling and graphics. And it highly touts the discs as being Region-free, usuable on DVDs anywhere …

It’s almost certainly bootleg. WB has not released all these episodes to the public (hence it being so tempting). So the quality, and the recourse if there’s a problem, is limited.

On the other hand, they sure seem to be widely advertised through Google, and I’ve not found anything explicitly negative about them, just the same sort of vague warnings that are ringing softly in my own head.

Hrm. Don’t think so.

But … damn … they have a lot of cool stuff collected …

Um …

Okay, I can understand why the darker colors, I guess — the bright primaries are thought, perhaps, garish (though then I’d darken the blue, too, not just the red).

But, looking at the more detailed pics, I note that the boots look pretty, well, uh — face it, if you’re going for the boots, go for the boots. Going for shorter boots just looks weird. Or like you’re a normal person improvising out of your closet for a costume party.

And … dude, what’s with the belt buckle? I mean, there’s already a big (well, medium-sized) S-logo on the chest; repeating it (and non-canonically) on the belt buckle is ex-ess-ive (to coin a phrase).

Oh, my. Watching a repeat Justice League Unlimited, “Ultimatum,” I was treated to a rebooted version of the “classic” Superfriends, including updated (and renamed) versions of such famous made-for-TV figures as Apache Chief, Samurai, Black Vulcan, and (heh) the Wonder Twins. No sign of Gleek, though, more’s the pity.

Mix well with some Warren Ellis Ultramarine Corps, tie into (actually kick off) this season’s Amanda Waller/Project Cadmus subplot, toss in Maxwell Lord, shake well, and good stuff.

But recognizing the old SF would have made it worth the price of admission even if the rest of it had sucked. The twins, and their powers, were the giveaway.

Dora is (mercifully) on the outs, but Teen Titans and the Backyardigans are current big hits for Katherine. And, of a mercy, both are enjoyable to us, too.

The Backyardigans is a CG “musical” show, about kids imagining “the whole wide world in our yard to explore.” They journey to the Old West, to Haunted Houses, to Spy Missions … all great stuff. The transition effect as they enter the make-believe realm (and exit it at the end) reminds us a bit of what Doyce was aiming at with the Grimm Therapy game.

But it’s the music that makes the show. Catchy tunes, in a variety of genres, interesting, non-cloying, and highly addictive. Good stuff. Now I wish there was an (authorized) CD out there with more than four songs on it. Though it sounds like there’s some swag coming this spring …

Since we got the DVR, I’m finally able to start regularly watching Justice League Unlimited. I’ve been only mildly impressed so far — it’s keen to see all the added DCU characters, but that coupled single-part episodes have meant that characterization beyond the sketchiest has been very thin on the ground.

Last week’s ep — “The Once and Future Thing” — was an exception, and so proved the rule. The cast was largely limited (three core members, plus four guest stars we didn’t get more than a sketch of) and it’s a two-parter, so there was time for a bit more personal bits amongst the principles (Bats, GL, and WW). And more next time (part 2) as well. Glee.

Spoilers below …
