Because who cares about antibiotic resistance (cough cough cough)

The FDA has been signalling since the late 70s it was going to rescind its ruling that it's safe for agricultural feed makers to include penicillin and tetracycline in feed, since it's been obvious for at least that long that it's only adding to the number of bugs out there resistant to those drugs.

Alas, it's now signalling (nearly below the radar) it's not going to do anything about the matter any time soon. Which is stupid, but I'm sure will make agribusiness happy. #ddtb

Battling a black market in Cheetos

Actually, the problem presented in the article is twofold:

1. A lot of the kids are used to eating chicken nuggets and frozen pizza and microwave corn dogs and the like at home. So, not surprisingly, they think other stuff is icky when it shows up at school.

2. The menu itself is less of a problem than the execution. Either the cooking isn't being monitored, the cooks aren't being trained properly, or the dishes aren't being selected for an institutional prep setting. (That's supported by folks who thought the voting samples were good, but what's actually served is not.)

I support the schools trying to come up with healthier fare for the students they are serving (there is no constitutional right to be fed nacho cheese Doritos), but to be effective, both of those factors need to be considered. #ddtb

Autism, diagnosis, and social factors

It's easy to say that someone does, or does not, have, say, a broken bone. Or measles. When it comes to something like autism, though, which lacks concrete diagnostic factors (it depends on behavioral observations and judgments, not on culturing things or X-rays or looking at blood under a microscope), it's not so clear a matter. As the below article (in turn pointing to some LA Times research) indicates. #ddtb

In sickness and in health

It's been long known that marriage makes for healthier individuals, overall. Life expectancy is higher among married couples than singles, etc. Whether it's a matter of general happiness, or having someone else to care for you, or whatever, it's a pretty clear effect.

So it's not at all surprising that the same would pertain to gays who marry. Which adds a whole new humanitarian wrinkle to the question of marriage equality. Is it morally defensible to deny gays the same demonstrable health benefits that marriage provides to straight couples? #ddtb

Literal paternalism

I would hope that, prior to 17, if my daughter had a concern that required emergency contraception that she would come to my wife and/or me for assistance. If she didn't feel comfortable doing that (not beyond the realm of reason), I would hope she would do what she felt had to be done, and that she would be able to do so.

Apparently Pres. Obama's fatherhood trumps my fatherhood (perhaps he's a father of two daughters), and he gets to decide what restrictions my daughter has on her options. He's decided to support (if not order) his HHS Secretary to override the FDA scientific and policy analysis that it was safe and helpful for "Plan B" emergency contraceptives to be available over the counter. Instead, Plan B will only be available to her, until she's 17, with a prescription. Which means she has to come to us, and has to get an appointment with a doctor first; or, alternately, go without and deal with a pregnancy.

Barack — will you be available for other fatherly decisions and caretaking of my daughter? I mean, if that's the job you're angling for, maybe you can help her get ready for school in the morning, too, or harangue her to keep her room clean. Otherwise, thanks for nothing. #ddtb

The GOP War on Nutrition Continues

Every time Michelle Obama opens her mouth to suggest that, y'know, maybe feeding kids junk food every day isn't good for them, the Right immediately screams out that she's some sort of Nutrition Nazi, out to rob kids of their God-endowed Freedom Fries.

And in keeping with that tradition — and Ronald Reagan's famous classification of ketchup as a serving of "vegetables" — we have this: Congress (led by the GOP, but acquiesced to by the Dems) "unraveling" Dept of Agriculture's proposed higher nutritional standards for school lunches paid for by federal grants:

"Food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools, the salt industry and potato growers requested the changes, and some conservatives in Congress say the federal government shouldn't be telling children what to eat."

Except, of course, that the federal government is paying for it.

Listening to the food industry flacks defending the nutritional value of daily french fries and tomato paste would be hysterically funny, if it weren't kids ending up as the target of it. #ddtb
